Here are three lesson plans that will be used by the Modesto team with families of people living with disability in the rural areas where the chairs are being distributed. These are just three CHE lessons in a whole series of lessons on disability written to enable communities to come together and use local resources to meet the needs of their own disabled.
Disabilities: Opening DoorsHow Are People With Disabilities Treated in Your Community?
Support GroupsThe goal of using these three lessons in community meetings while distributing the wheelchairs is to catalyze the formation of support groups, mobilizing people to work together to:
- Reduce stigma and shame
- Integrate the disabled into the larger community
- Use local resources to make adaptive equipment
- Connect with government services
- Provide relief to each other as caregivers
- Get disabled children in school
- Provide activities for those disabled who cannot go to school
- Study God's Word together
These support groups, once they are formed, will function under the leadership of HCDI staff already at work in these communities.
